Intel's CPU Hits 9.1GHz with Liquid Helium Chill

Get ready to be chilled (literally) because Intel's latest desktop processor, the Core i9-14900KS, has achieved a record-breaking clock speed – but with a twist! While the processor boasts a respectable 6.2GHz max clock speed out of the box, overclockers have pushed it beyond its limits using some seriously extreme cooling. On Thursday, Asus and the renowned PC overclocking team ElmorLabs announced they successfully broke the 9.1GHz barrier with the Core i9-14900KS, setting a new world record. This surpasses ElmorLabs' previous feat in December 2022, where they reached 9,008MHz with the Core i9-13900K. So, how did they achieve this icy overclocking feat? The secret ingredient? Liquid helium!

The Power of Liquid Coolant

Traditionally, overclockers rely on liquid nitrogen to cool down processors during overclocking. This is because running a PC chip beyond its normal limits generates immense heat. However, liquid nitrogen has its limitations. ElmorLabs opted for an even more extreme cooling solution – liquid helium. Liquid helium boasts significantly colder temperatures compared to liquid nitrogen, giving them a better chance of reaching higher clock speeds. Their video showcasing the process reveals the team carefully funneling liquid helium into a cooling pot placed on top of the Core i9-14900KS processor. The effect is dramatic, with a fan blowing away the resulting frosty vapor. This extreme cooling allowed the PC to boot up Windows at a jaw-dropping -193 degrees Celsius (-315.4 Fahrenheit)! As the temperature plummeted further, reaching a staggering -231 degrees Celsius, the Intel chip peaked at a record-breaking 9.1GHz on one of its performance cores. It's worth noting that during this benchmark, the remaining seven cores ran at a more modest 3.2GHz.

A Real-World Application?

While achieving this overclocking milestone is impressive, it's important to remember that liquid helium cooling is far from practical for everyday PC use. The extreme temperatures and specialized equipment involved make it an unrealistic solution for most users. However, this achievement showcases the potential of Intel's latest processors and the relentless pursuit of performance by overclocking enthusiasts. It also pushes the boundaries of cooling technology, paving the way for future advancements in thermal management solutions. The Core i9-14900KS hits store shelves today with its impressive 6.2GHz clock speed. While achieving 9.1GHz might require a vat of liquid helium, it's a testament to the raw power and overclocking potential of this new desktop processor.
